Personal Injury Protection Insurance

Personal injury protection—also called “PIP coverage” or “no-fault insurance”—is a type of car insurance that helps cover your and your passengers’ medical expenses resulting from an accident, regardless of fault. PIP insurance is not available everywhere, but it’s required in some states and offered optionally in several others. With PIP coverage, a driver files a claim with their own insurer for injuries resulting from a covered accident.

  • Service replacement. For example, PIP could cover childcare costs while you recover.
  • Funeral costs. It can pay for burials or cremations.

Depending on where you live, PIP insurance may also provide financial protection if you’re injured by a vehicle while walking or riding your bike.

What Does PIP Insurance Not Cover?

Ordinarily, PIP doesn’t provide coverage for:

Damage to your vehicle: Unlike collision coverage, PIP doesn’t provide protection for damage to your car.

Theft of your vehicle: Unlike comprehensive coverage, PIP doesn’t protect you financially if your vehicle is stolen.

Damage to another person’s property: Unlike property damage liability coverage, PIP would not pay to repair or replace someone else’s vehicle or other property if you’re at fault for the accident.

Is Personal Injury Protection Required?

If you live in one of these , PIP may be required by state insurance laws, available as an option or included by default unless you reject it in writing, or an auto accident in which the at-fault driver does not have liability insurance or not enough of it to cover your claim.
